Collection: Wenge, White

White Wenge wood, Amphimas pterocarpoides and A. ferrugineus, is known known by a number of different commercial names including White Wenge, Lati, and Yaya. This unique, tropical hardwood is native to Central and West Africa. The White Wenge tree grows to heights of 90-145 ft. tall with diameters up to 48 inches. The specific gravity of the wood ranges from .58 to .78 with a janka hardness of 1,200 lb\f. Sapwood is light yellow in color, and is difficult to distinguish from the heartwood. The grain structure is very similar in pattern to traditional, dark colored Wenge (Millettia laurentii), though the species are not closely linked botanically. The wood darkens to a golden yellow in time. It works well and is easily glued and finished, having a moderate blunting effect on cutting edges. Uses include furniture, flooring, boxes, interior trim, plywood, turned articles, and other fine woodworking projects.
