Shag Bark Hickory, Carya ovata, is a long lived North American species. Mature trees commonly grow to a height of 75-100 ft. Diameters of 1-2 ft. are normal when allowed to grow for a long period. Colors range from a reddish brown in the sapwood to a darker golden brown with hints of red in the heartwood. This dense, open grained wood is excellent for flooring, cabinets, furniture, and other fine uses. Density ranges from .62 to .80 and can be quite dense. It sands and finishes well.
