Ivory wood is a unique species that is superb in color and working properties. This allows it to be utilized as a substitute for real Ivory while not putting pressure on living Elephants. As you can see in our photo, we have an Ebony Elephant with Ivory wood tusks. The tusks on the Elephant are natural without a finish. The wood is easy to carve and finish as it is a light to medium density hardwood that is similar to Big Leaf Maple.
Trees are not large with 12-20 diameters and 25-40 ft. heights. Generally all of this wood is kept in Laos for its internal carving market.
