Castello Boxwood, Calycophyllum multiflorum, originates in South American mostly in Paraguay. Although not a true Buxus species, it shares many of the same attributes that make Boxwood such a desirable species. You could not ask for a better wood to mill – this is perhaps the finest grained wood in the World. It has fine, uniform texture that is silky smooth & takes a high, lustrous finish. The wood is able to hold extremely fine detail which makes it ideal for model ship building, instruments, carvings, engraving, inlay, piano keys, precision instruments, textiles, turnery, chess pieces, veneer, bobbins, intricate turnings, shuttles, spindles, bow staves, spools & more! Colors range from creamy yellow to variegated brown/olive-like heartwood that is generally only on one face.

These boards are rough, unsurfaced with natural defects, such as checks, in each board.  Kiln dried.  3-5″ wide, 4-6ft long

Picture shown is a representation of these same boards AFTER trimming and planing.

Honey Locust, Gleditsia triacanthos, is a great American wood for the 4th of July week! The tree can reach a height of 65’–100’ feet and produce dense and durable lumber that works well and takes a nice polish. With fast growth, Honey Locust trees are relatively short-lived; their life spans are typically about 120 years, though some live up to 150 years. They are prone to losing large branches in windstorms. Honey Locust trees do not grow in sufficient numbers to support a bulk industry like Maple or Oak; rather, they provide a unique wood to a small niche market. Logs are also used for posts and rails since the wood takes a long time to rot. In the past, the hard thorns of the younger trees have been used as nails. Despite its name, the Honey Locust is not a significant honey plant. The name is derived from the sweet taste of the legume pulp, which was used for food by Native American people and can also be fermented to make beer. The long pods, which eventually dry and ripen to brown or maroon are surrounded in a tough, leathery skin that adheres very strongly to the pulp within. The pulp—bright green in unripe pods—is strongly sweet, crisp and succulent in unripe pods. Dark brown tannin-rich beans are found in slots within the pulp. The color in Honey Locust wood ranges from light pinkish red to creamy tan.

These boards are rough, unsurfaced with natural defects, such as checks, in each board.  Kiln dried.  3-15″ wide (6″ avg.), 7-8′ long

Wenge is a unique species of hardwoods from equatorial West Africa.  Wenge has fine dark lines with narrow brown streaks. Chocolate brown lines appear black when a clear finish is applied and the lighter colored streaks show as subtle contrast.  The closest species match in color and working properties is Pheasant wood which is extremely popular and in short supply.  Wenge is a good wood to use in place of Gabon Ebony when larger defect free sizes are required.  Trees are generally 60-100’ tall with clear trunks up to the base of the canopy.  Trunks are 20-40” in diameter with 3-4” of sapwood present.  Wenge has been difficult to obtain over the last 15 years due to the internal conflict in Africa. During the last 15 years we have never seen a figured log like this! We feel privileged to be able to supply this to you.

These boards are rough, unsurfaced with natural defects, such as checks and voids, in each board.  Kiln dried

ON SALE FOR $2.50 per board foot

Madrone is known as Strawberry tree, Madrona, or Madrone burl.  This is a unique Pacific hardwood that has pink & tan colors with an occasional red streak. Our Madrone blanks are highly burled & figured. Through our proprietary process, the wood has been pressure cooked to relieve tension and then partially air dried.  These pieces are ideal for gallery grade projects and high end woodworking as well as Bass and Electric guitars.

Trees are typically 10” up to 30” diameter and between 40-70’ tall.  Trunks are smooth as silk due to the tree shedding its bark continually.  Logs are rarely straight so lumber over 10’ long is a rarity.  Random trees growing in mixed stands of Douglas fir produce the best lumber as the trunk is long and relatively strait.  Trees in the open are much more bushy with many limbs that will not produce good lumber.  Burls grow almost exclusively underground and must be dug up sometimes by hand and then pressure cooked and milled.  Many Madrone trees grow in areas that have many rocks so our sawyers have their hands full milling around the rocks and dirt pockets that are present in every burl.  This is expensive due to the large number of saw blades that are destroyed and the large amount of labor milling this.

Boards are kiln dried and surfaced on two sides. These boards have live edges with bark and freshly trimmed ends. There are heart checks, surface checks, and knots in most boards. There are also other natural defects present. A Crown of 1/4″ to 1/2″ is normal with some boards. There is a nice, even color in these boards that resembles Swiss pear. Ships to USA ONLY.

W26145: Boards measure nominal 99″ (down to 95″) x 11″ (down to 5″) x 1″ with an average 7″ width. Block tally is 242 board feet at $5.50 per board foot. There are 40 pieces in this pallet.
These boards are weathered on the outside.  We have subtracted 10% from the board foot tally and then calculated the sale price to accommodate the end trimming that will be necessary.

Oleo Europa, grown throughout many areas of Central Europe, was planted by locals, soldiers, and anyone who has enjoyed eating olives or cooking with olive oil. Native European stock tends to produce larger boules with larger, thicker, and more stable lumber. Ideal for high end cabinets, end tables, and fancy turned articles. European Olive tends to have regular grain patterns (not fiddle back or burl) unlike the orchard trees in the United States. A rare and prized species in exotic lumber. Italy. This is the same species of olive that is sent from the “Holy land” it has just been grown elsewhere.

These boards are rough, unsurfaced with natural defects, such as checks and voids, in each board.  They are kiln dried with live edge.  Will yield 2-5 usable cuttings

From equatorial western Africa, Zebrawood is usually logged by hand with a hundred men or more on mountain slopes. One of the most appealing features of Zebra is the exotic appearance of the colorful grain. Black & golden lines make this an excellent choice for many projects. For ease in finishing, use a sanding sealer to seal the open pores. Zebra has interlocking grain that can produce beautiful iridescence in quartersawn boards! The wood is prone to checking and twisting if not properly cared for. Uses include: furniture, cabinets, architectural applications (veneer), turned articles, rifle stocks, and boxes. Africa.
